What are News Services?

News services originate from News servers, which function as a distribution and delivery source for the 15,000+ public news groups currently accessible over the USENET news network. USENET is the largest news and discussion group-based network on the Internet. The news servers utilize the Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP) to interface with other USENET news servers and to distribute news to anyone using a standard NNTP newsreader (DOS/OS2/Windows , Mac News Readers, Unix/Linux ). News servers also make it possible to serve your own news and discussion groups publicly over the Internet or privately over your own local network.

What type of News Services does EMBARQ offer?

EMBARQ provides News Feed service.
News Feed Service - This is where you have a News server that will receive feeds from our News server. The amount of information sent is as follows. Approximately 10 - 15 Gigabytes of new USENET data daily. - A server with a 200 Gig drive would provide enough space to keep archives for one week before you start purging older lists.

What is the hostname of your News Server?

This will be provided to you when subscribe for news feed service.

How do I subscribe to your News Services?

The News Feed Service is a value added service. Please contact your EMBARQ Account Manager to establish a News Feed Service contract. Your EMBARQ Account Manager will then forward a Job Cost Analysis (JCA) to the IP Services team. After which you will have to provide us the hostname and IP address of your News Server. In addition add our News Server information into your News Server to allow news transport between the two servers. Web Hosting Services

What type of Web Server software does EMBARQ run?

EMBARQ is currently running Apache web server software.

What do I have to do to get my web site up and running?

After establishing a web hosting contract with your sales representative, you will need to:

• Provide the domain name for the hosting account
• Provide an administrative account name and password
• Create a web site, if you do not already have one
• Publish a copy of your web site to your hosting account via IP
• Establish DNS services with us or coordinate DNS changes with the provider of your DNS services
• Your web site should be visible to the world.

E-Mail Hosting

What do I do once I have a contract for E-mail hosting services?

You will need to submit the following information in order to get your e-mail accounts activated:

• Account Names johnsmith@yourdomain.com or john@yourdomain.com
• Passwords for the accounts - Passwords should be eight characters and include at least 2 numbers. To enhance security, use words not found in a dictionary. Example psswm22.
• Send this information to vas@embarqservices.net
• Ensure you MX record in your DNS zone points to webmail.embarqservices.net.

Does EMBARQ offer SMTP services?

EMBARQ provides SMTP service in two forms:

• SMTP service is provided as part of our e-mail hosting service with mail accounts. Mail accounts can be set up in groups of 10 or 25 accounts.
• SMTP relay. Same as the e-mail hosting service without the e-mail accounts. This service is used when you are using a third party company to host your mail accounts.

Please contact your EMBARQ Account Manager to establish a SMTP service contract. Your EMBARQ Account Manager will then forward a Job Cost Analysis (JCA) to the IP Services team. After which, you will have to provide EMBARQ the domain you want hosted in addition to the IP addresses of your Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) from which you will be accessing your mail.

Important Note: Please be aware that this service will only allow you to send your 3rd party hosted e-mail through our SMTP gateway from your directly connected EMBARQ network.

Monitoring and Utilization Reporting

EMBARQ provides a value added service for Proactive Monitoring and Utilization reporting of Internet circuits which are directly connected to EMBARQ's Internet Access Routers. You can contact your sales representative for additional information and pricing regarding this Value Added Service.

How can I request bandwidth utilization reporting?

Utilization Reporting is available in states where EMBARQ IP Services are provided. This Value Added Service can be provided for circuits which are directly connected to any of EMBARQ Internet access routers. Your sales representative can provide you additional information and pricing on this Value Added Service.
